Menneskeheten faller i klørne på en epidemi av mystisk blindhet. Det begynner helt brått. En mann blir momentant blind mens han kjører hjem fra jobb og hele hans verden forandres plutselig til en uhyggelig melkehvit dis. En etter en, skal hver eneste person han møter – hans kone, hans lege, til og med den gode samaritanen som gir ham skyss hjem – lide den samme urovekkende skjebnen.
